🎧 Understanding Gestalt – Episode 5: Paradoxical Theory of Change – Agata Sitarska
Does change really begin with accepting who we are now?
In the latest episode of the “Understanding Gestalt” podcast , Agata Sitarska – a therapist, supervisor and trainer at the Institute for Gestalt Coaching and Education – introduces listeners to one of the key tenets of Gestalt therapy: the paradoxical theory of change.
This theory, formulated by Arnold Beisser, states that real change occurs when an individual becomes who he or she is, not when he or she attempts to become what he or she is not. In other words, change does not come from trying to transform oneself by force, but from fully accepting and engaging with one’s current situation.
The conversation covers topics such as:
- Why trying to change can lead to frustration
- The role of awareness and acceptance in the therapeutic process
- How paradoxical theory of change affects the therapeutic relationship
This is an episode for anyone who wants to understand why sometimes the harder we try, the harder it is for us to change – and how this can be reversed.
