The landscape of adolescence has radically changed in recent years, with so many young people struggling with developmental and behavioral problems and requiring professional support and specialized interventions. Parenting has also become an extremely complex issue. Starrs presents a contemporary understanding of adolescence, identifying three major character styles and offering a close-to-experience description of the modern teenager from a Gestalt perspective.
Gestalt Workshop – Bronagh Starrs: Working with Adolescents – Goals:
As young people evolved, so did parental approaches. In this workshop, we will explore how each configuration style in adolescence elicits a predictable parental response. We will examine the many challenges and dilemmas facing parents today, highlighting patterns and pitfalls that often make parenting interventions ineffective. Developmentally appropriate parenting strategies will be presented, addressing each configuration style.
Analysis of the adolescent process and parental reactions has implications for the therapeutic encounter. Gestalt Workshop – Bronagh Starrs: Working with Adolescents provides psychotherapists with a clear theoretical understanding and practical application. The intervention focuses on both individual work with the teenager and parental involvement. The complexity of working with adolescents and parents who exhibit psychological entanglement is also presented.
